Ultraviolet Dawn, the mobile space trading game, has made it to Windows 8, but it fails to impress.
If you've seen other versions of Ultraviolet Dawn, you'll know it's a standard space trading game that some folks find pretty addictive. If you like the type of game, the premise certainly attracts. It's a huge open world where you're free to do what you want - accept missions, travel around galaxies, play villain or hero - the choice is yours.
The graphics in themselves aren't great. To a certain extent, that's part of the charm. Ultraviolet Dawn is clearly centered more around the experience than the looks, and what it lacks in flash graphics might just be made up for in adventure and swashbuckling. In fact, Jon described the game for iOS as being a good option for competitive players, with online scoreboards and the ability to save the game whenever you want, major pluses in a game that's just so big.
Unfortunately, Ultraviolet Dawn doesn't make the transition to Windows so smoothly. The graphics look worse on a tablet or PC than they do on the smaller iPhone screen, and the cheesy music is simply unforgivable.
The controls, better on a tablet than PC, are clunky and when it came down to it, we found that we just couldn't be bothered with Ultraviolet Dawn - as far as PC games go, there are much more attractive options out there!
If you know you love Ultraviolet Dawn, give this Windows 8 version a go. If you don't, look elsewhere for your space kicks.
